Background
At DankTech, we built DankBook with React Native and an internal project with Flutter. This article is a practical comparison — not a benchmark on paper, but the team's day-to-day experience.
React Native — pros and cons
Strengths
Code sharing with the web: If your team already uses React for the web, moving to React Native feels natural. Logic, hooks and state management — most of it can be reused.
The JavaScript ecosystem: npm has almost everything you need. Integration with a Node.js or Next.js backend is extremely smooth.
New Architecture (JSI): Since React Native 0.73+, performance has improved significantly thanks to the new JavaScript Interface — the old bridge, the main reason RN was criticised for performance, has been fully replaced.
Weaknesses
- ✓Debugging native modules is still complicated
- ✓Some complex animations need an extra library (Reanimated)
- ✓Setting up the environment the first time takes a while
Flutter — pros and cons
Strengths
Performance: Flutter renders with its own Skia/Impeller engine — it doesn't depend on native components, so it is consistent on every device. 60fps animation is the default.
Great UI out of the box: Material Design and Cupertino widgets come built in, with a consistent design system.
Fast hot reload: The developer experience is very smooth.
Weaknesses
- ✓You have to learn Dart — a good language but less common than JS
- ✓Larger app size (~10–15MB compared with RN)
- ✓Integration with the web ecosystem is more complicated

Which should you choose?
Choose React Native if:

Choose Flutter if:
- ✓The app needs complex animations or a highly custom UI
- ✓You have no constraints tied to the web ecosystem
- ✓Your team is willing to learn Dart
At DankTech, we use React Native by default for its code reuse and how quickly we can hire. Flutter is considered when a client has special UI/UX requirements. Learn more about our mobile app development service.
