Outsourcing developers: when it makes sense and how to choose a partner

When should you outsource developers?
Building your own engineering team is a good long-term choice, but it isn't always feasible. Outsourcing usually makes sense when:
- ✓You need to start now, while hiring a good developer can take months
- ✓The project has an end date: build, hand over, then only light maintenance
- ✓You lack a specific skill: mobile, DevOps, payment integration... that your current team doesn't have
- ✓The workload goes up and down by season or by product stage
- ✓Your business isn't a tech company and has no one managing engineering yet
Three common outsourcing models
| Model | Best when | You manage |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-scope project | Clear requirements, fixed scope | The delivered result |
| Dedicated team | Long-term product, requirements keep changing | Work priorities |
| Staff augmentation | You have a team and process but lack people | Each developer |
Fixed-scope project
Both sides agree on scope, timeline and cost up front. You manage very little, but every change outside the scope has to be renegotiated. Suits websites and apps whose requirements are already clear.
Dedicated team
The partner sets up a team (developers, testers, a project manager) working only on your product, billed monthly. Flexible when requirements change often — which is almost certain with a new product.
Staff augmentation
The partner's developers join your team and your process directly. Effective when you already have a tech lead to assign work and review code.
What must be in the contract
- ✓Source code ownership: all source code, documentation and accounts belong to you once paid
- ✓Confidentiality (NDA): your data and business ideas are not used for anyone else
- ✓Where the code lives: the repository sits in your account from day one, not only at handover
- ✓Acceptance: clear criteria for each stage
- ✓Warranty and support after handover
- ✓Termination terms: if you stop halfway, what do you receive
Warning signs when choosing a partner
- ✓They quote immediately without asking about your business
- ✓They don't give you access to the source code while the work is in progress
- ✓There are no regular demos — you only see the product when it's "done"
- ✓They don't say who will actually work on your project
- ✓They promise everything is possible, on time, with no risks at all
How to work well with an outsourced team
- ✓Appoint one person on your side to make decisions and answer questions
- ✓Hold a short demo every 1–2 weeks to catch misunderstandings early
- ✓Keep priorities clear: what comes first, what can wait
- ✓Share the same tools: task management, chat channel, documentation
Conclusion
Outsourcing developers isn't just about the hourly rate. The right model, a contract that is clear about source code and a transparent way of working are what decide whether a project succeeds.
DankTech offers dedicated developer teams under all three models above, and takes on custom software development as fixed-scope projects. Tell us about your project.
