What's new in Next.js 16? What you need to know

Why does Next.js 16 matter?
Next.js 16 is a big step forward: Turbopack is finally stable after many beta releases. Builds are up to 70% faster than with Webpack — something that directly affects developer productivity every day.
At DankTech, we migrated all our projects to Next.js 16 from day one, and this is what we learned.
The biggest changes
1. Turbopack is officially stable
After many experimental versions, Turbopack is now ready for production. Real results at DankTech:
- ✓Cold start: from 12 seconds down to 3.5 seconds
- ✓Hot reload: almost instant (~200ms)
- ✓Production build: ~65% faster
2. Global TypeScript helpers
Next.js 16 introduces PageProps and LayoutProps as global TypeScript helpers — no import needed. Typing params and searchParams is now much shorter.
3. Deeper React 19 integration
Server Actions are now fully stable. Form handling with useActionState and useFormStatus removes a pile of boilerplate code. This is the change the DankTech team found most useful in practice.
4. Improved image optimization
The Image component now detects sizes better, supports more modern formats, and performance on mobile is noticeably better.
Should you migrate right away?
If you're on Next.js 14/15: Yes, the migration is quite smooth. It took the DankTech team about half a day for a mid-sized project.
If you're on the Pages Router: It is still fully supported, but this is a good moment to consider moving to the App Router.
Conclusion
Next.js 16 isn't just a routine update — it marks the maturity of the App Router and React Server Components in real production environments. If you are building a new web app, it is the best choice available today. Need help with a project? See our web design and development service.
